Welcome back to life at school in the New Year.  I hope you had a great summer. It has certainly been a great spring and summer in the bush at Manawahe with two Kokako chicks hatching and growing nicely. I saw them last week and they are developing into healthy birds who are nearly as large as their parents, but with a distinctive pink wattle instead of the dark blue of their parents. This is indeed very special as last year no Kokako chicks hatched. Another great development is the sighting of many Whiteheads in the area. It is clear that the Kokako are not the only bird that thrives as a result of the pest eradication programme.        

Groups that will be visiting our centre this coming year can now enjoy our new Archery set. By providing a range of different activities, we are starting to make the facility more attractive for groups that want to stay overnight. But please remember, it is not called bush camp for nothing. It is back to basics, with cooking on your own little stoves and the lake or our outdoor bush showers to keep you clean.

The start of the school year is a perfect time to plan ahead and book a trip to the Manawahe Eco Centre. Feel free to contact me to organise an education experience that suits the needs of your group!
